Joya beauty Goes To The Big Apple

Airbrushing is the latest and greatest makeup application technique; many salons offer this service, but very few have the years of experience that I have... not to brag, but it's true!

I spent this past weekend in New York City attending the Temptu Pro Artists Airbrush Workshop for advanced airbrushing techniques. I tested new products, colors and refined my techniques. Up until last weekend, I mainly used airbrushing for foundation, blush and highlighter... but now, I've broadened my skills and learned techniques to create amazing eye designs, tint lashes dark and smoky as well as contouring and highlighting.

I'm excited to say that I've taken my skills to the next level by increasing my precision and speed and mastered color correction and blemish covering. I'm looking forward to utilizing my new found techniques and advanced skills on my brides this coming season!

Here are photos of one of our models.

Joya beauty Puttin’ on the Makeup for Puttin’ on the Glitz!

Last Friday night Assiah Russell, owner of Puttin’ on the Glitz, had a Grand Opening at her new location on Market Street in Portsmouth. Joya beauty was there sprucing up the Hostess for what turned out to be a very busy night!

Puttin’ on the Glitz was literally packed wall to wall; guests were able to “Ooo and Ahh” over Assiah’s amazing collection of hats, jewelry and accessories. Needless to say, I think everyone left with a little somethin’ to talk about.

Julia Russell Photographer did a beautiful job capturing these photos of me getting Assiah prepped and ready to greet the crowd. Lena, of Hair That Moves, and Kathy, of Beleza Salon and Spa, were also there with me. What a great night to mix and mingle!

Congrats to Assiah for such a successful Open House! If you were not able to attend, check out her website at: http://www.puttinontheglitznh.com/ or better yet stop in to see the new store.

On the Newstands now - Wedding Styles New England

Having the opportunity to participate in the photo shoot that was being featured in the 2011 Grace Ormonde Wedding Style Magazine New England was exciting enough but when they said that they were picking one of the shots for the cover almost made me CRAZY!

Lena Hartford, Hair that Moves and I travelled to Portsmouth Rhode Island to the Polo Club for the shoot. The models were all beautiful before we started, the dresses and jewlery to die for.

On newstands now!

Nor'easter Bridal Beauty

The weather did not dampen our bride Bethany's joy at all. It was a wild day at the lake but she sailed through bringing a brightness to the day with her smiles. Lena Hartford, Hair that Moves, is putting on the veil and off she goes to the ceremony.
I had to include this photo below. This is taken in my studio during her makeup design appointment. Classic bride!

Bridal Beauty - Whitney's Day

Images courtesey of Emilie Inc. Photographer

I am not sure who was looking forward to August 14th as much...Whitney, the bride or me. We met last year and she graciously agreed to have me participate in her lovely wedding day beauty preparations. Whitney of "Gus and Ruby's" of Portsmouth, NH has an eye for color and her wedding palette did not disappoint...from the stunning gown to the bridesmaids dresses (plum purple) and shoes (orange with white polka dots) to the riot of color in the flowers. We brought some of the color into her wedding makeup in the form of a deep purple eyeliner with warm shadow highlights.
FUN just like the Bride.
Thank you Whitney for having me. Blessings for many happy years together...for us as friends and with the groom as well

The Makeup Show in Review

I am so excited about the new techniques and products I picked up at The Makeup Show. Got to use them these past two weekends and I am truly impressed with the advanced formulas of these products. Just giving you another reason to hire a professional makeup artist for your special events. These eye creams are used for underwater photo shoots and an aquatic ballet troupe. They are beautiful and they absolutely do not budge. And..talk about perfect skin. The ladies looked like they stepped out of the pages of a fashion magazine ad that had been photo shopped yet they said they didn't feel like they were wearing anything on their face.
Hooray! Mission accomplished.
Thank you Dany Sanz who came to the US from Paris just for this event and for the few selected participants of this workshop.

Why Airbrush Makeup?

Ladies today want lightweight coverage...we are the no makeup makeup generation.
I use my air brush for almost every makeup application when photography or video is involved....from brides to head shots to editorial.
Why?
No one says it better than the makers of the product that I use...OCC Skin(Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics)so I am going to tell you about this wonderful makeup medium in their words:

The precision application offered by airbrush makeup has two major benefits that stand up to the challenges presenting makeup artist today.

Full Coverage, Sheer Texture:
A true airbrush foundation is opaque, yet thin in texture, offering a full coverage finish that's dispersed as sheerly and evenly as possible. The result is a perfect-looking skin achieved with a minimum of product.

Refined Finish:
The spray dot pattern of an airbrush application closely resembles the way a camera reads textures - in Pixels. The effect is more seamless than the trace marks brushes and sponges can leave behind. While usually unnoticeable in person, these imprints can become quite visible in hi-def close-up or in a high resolution digital photograph.

The product that I use in all my makeup applications is lightweight, breathable and completely oil-free. It's also free of alcohol, silicone and other common dermal irritants found in airbrush makeup formulas of the past. OCC Skin is also 100% Vegan and Cruelty Free.

Joya beauty goes to Miss Teen Maine Pagaent

Late Breaking news!!!! Vanessa won "most photogenic" in the pagaent!
Meet Vanessa, our very own Miss Teen Maine contestant. Lena Hartford, Hair that Moves, and I teamed up and traveled to So. Portland last night to attend to this hopeful young lady. Her "fun in fashion" costume was an original custom made salsa dress...very beautiful and I made her make to match the variety of colors in the dress. We are anxiously watching the website, Miss Teen USA, to see the results....WHEN she wins we are all off to Chicago for the next part of the competition!
Vanessa and her sister Ashley came to me as a referral from Crystal at Madeleine's Event Central. She was shopping for her formal white dress to walk the runway and our dear friend introduced us. Vanessa and Ashley visited the Joya Studio for a makeup and hair design date and promised to come back on a regular basis now! Love making new friends.
Check out the shop for your holiday dresses now. They have a stunning selection perfect for all your Christmas and New Year's Eve events.

Lauren's Big Day started very early at "The Meadowmere" in Ogunquit. Lena Hartford, Hair that Moves, and I arrived to join in the fun and do a little hair and makeup at the same time. The "getting ready" room was filled with family and friends, lots of laughter and love. We finished with the Moms and the bridal party and then started for "The Outlook" in So. Berwick to make the bride and her lovely sister the Maid of Honor, ready for their entrance.

October 3, 2009 My dear friend and Joya bride Jillian married her true love Stephen at the First Church in Swampscott, MA.

Jillian and I met in 2007 while I was preparing to attend to her soon to be sister-in-law, Laura for her wedding in Ipswich, MA June 2008. Jillian, her mother Merry, her Aunt Connie, friend Wendy and other cousins and neighbors made the trip to Dover through rain, snow, sleet and ice for regular skin care appointments and makeup lessons first for her brother's wedding and then her own.

The morning of the wedding my friend and talented makeup artist Katherine MacDonald of Beliza in Chelmsford arrived at the Marblehead Inn bright and early. We had a wonderful time with all 8 or Jillian's bridesmaids, MOB Merry, MOG Debbi and Aunt Connie. They fed us yummy breakfast treats, lots of coffee and the best of all...hugs and kisses. We felt like part of the family and I was of course teary eyed during the ceremony just like a dotting aunt would be.

Couldn't resist posting this photo of Jillian as it captures her radiant smile. As much as I would like to take credit for her glowing skin and sparkling eyes...I think marrying Stephen is the real reason!

Best wishes, Jillian and Steve, for a long and happy life together.
Thank you Merry and Co. for your visits and I hope to see you post wedding for more. Don't forget....we still have Roger!

Photo Shoot with talented local photographer

I was invited to participate in a project coordinated by Jennifer Belkus Goolkasian, the talented photographer/owner of Aphrodite Wedding Photos (http://www.aphroditeweddingphotos.com/)

Along with several other local vendors we created a series of vintage wedding photos to be submitted to a national wedding magazine....stay tuned for images.

More on Jennifer's project...her mother owns Resurrected Relics, Original and Adapted Attire. They have combined their interests in creating a series of shoots, each featuring an authentic vintage gown. They rely on the talents and services of other local vendors to bring the shoot to life, and to contribute original make-up, hair, jewelry, floral arrangements, and so on. While they plan to represent each of the eras of the last century, the resulting look is vintage-inspired, rather than wholly historical.

Here are the other vendors that were involved:
Acorn Organic Salon, Amanda Smith, Blooms Flower Shoppe, Minka, Resurrected Relics, The Silver Fountain Inn and Touch Up

Beautiful new Joya beauty blog

Thanks to Patti Fousek of "Creative Mind Search Marketing" for making this lovely new blog a reality.

I had all but given up on the idea of blogging and participating in all the social media sites. We met at our "One More Referral" networking group. I was impressed with her knowledge of the subject and how she made it all sound very simple and user friendly for the rest of us techno challenged. Patti is very patient and very quickly calmed my concern about spending countless hours at my laptop. She works with large and small companies and holds workshops on the how to's of creating and maintaining a blog as well as unraveling the mysteries of the plethora of social media sites.

I will be able to share experiences, tips, techniques, product launches and anything you may want to know about makeup and skin care.

Just drop me an email joanne@joyabeauty.com with questions and I will use them to create a Q&A for others that probably would like to know the same thing.

Thank you for visiting my site and taking the time to check my blog.

Stay tuned!
