Multitask Your Skincare Products

Well Summer has finally come, and as we gather our beach bags to hit the beach, or that weekender bag to enjoy a long weekend - we want to have the least amount of "skincare and makeup luggage" as possible. So why not optimize your routine? Most of the "products" in our everyday lives seem to have the ability to multitask; and for the most part it feels good to get the most "bang for your buck".  WE, as people, are more multitask-ed than ever, let alone our daily "products" and technology! Our cell phones alone can do as much as a trusty assistant could do in a 40-hour week, at the touch of a finger!

So why not make your skincare routine and makeup bag "multitask-ed"?? Skin care scientists and makeup companies are finding that consumers don't want one product for each skincare or makeup need, they want one product that can be used for a couple different solutions.

For example: Moisturizer that's also sunscreen? Can we say PERFECT SOLUTION?! Who wants to use (let alone pay for) a professional grade product (like Joya beauty's PCA Skin line) and then layer another coat of SPF on their face? Seems redundant and a waste of money to me! PCA Skin offers two levels of SPF protection and a lovely moisturizer - so you're protected from the sun and staying moisturized - all while enjoying your favorite summer activity!  Don't forget though...you have to re-apply every two hours to stay protected no matter what.

Another example: Makeup. Sounds too good to be true, but here goes... eye shadow that can be used as cheek color... well not every color should be used in this fashion, but many can! How about lip colors that can be used as a cheek stain? Make your eyeliner into a smudged shadow too!  We carry a variety of makeup products that can be multitask-ed and wear beautifully no matter what adventure you are on!

I could go on and on!

At the end of the day we all want beautiful, youthful and protected skin - so why not make the most of your routine by using products that are: 1. good for your skin, 2. good for your budget and 3. can be used for more than one purpose.

If you would like me to help you optimize your routine, just email me to schedule an appointment for what Joya beauty calls an "Image Makeover". This is an hour appointment - and you'll leave with tips that will last a lifetime! You'll bring your makeup bag and skin care questions with you and we'll work with what you have to see how we can make the most out of what you are working with to give you the results that you're looking for. And if you're looking for new products to buy - then you've come to the right place!

Enjoy the Summer months and don't forget to use SPF everyday- even when you are on your way to work!

Joya beauty Goes To The Big Apple

Airbrushing is the latest and greatest makeup application technique; many salons offer this service, but very few have the years of experience that I have... not to brag, but it's true!

I spent this past weekend in New York City attending the Temptu Pro Artists Airbrush Workshop for advanced airbrushing techniques. I tested new products, colors and refined my techniques. Up until last weekend, I mainly used airbrushing for foundation, blush and highlighter... but now, I've broadened my skills and learned techniques to create amazing eye designs, tint lashes dark and smoky as well as contouring and highlighting.

I'm excited to say that I've taken my skills to the next level by increasing my precision and speed and mastered color correction and blemish covering. I'm looking forward to utilizing my new found techniques and advanced skills on my brides this coming season!

Here are photos of one of our models.

On the Newstands now - Wedding Styles New England

Having the opportunity to participate in the photo shoot that was being featured in the 2011 Grace Ormonde Wedding Style Magazine New England was exciting enough but when they said that they were picking one of the shots for the cover almost made me CRAZY!

Lena Hartford, Hair that Moves and I travelled to Portsmouth Rhode Island to the Polo Club for the shoot. The models were all beautiful before we started, the dresses and jewlery to die for.

On newstands now!

Nor'easter Bridal Beauty

The weather did not dampen our bride Bethany's joy at all. It was a wild day at the lake but she sailed through bringing a brightness to the day with her smiles. Lena Hartford, Hair that Moves, is putting on the veil and off she goes to the ceremony.
I had to include this photo below. This is taken in my studio during her makeup design appointment. Classic bride!

Lovely Sunday Bride

Sunday dawns a most beautiful day for a the beautiful Cristin.
We met in May 2009 and the big day finally arrived. I felt like part of the family since we had time to get to know each other before the wedding....my favorite part! Lena and I were treated to a wonderful morning in Cristin's beautiful home. Geneve Hoffman, Photographer arrived and the pre-ceremony photos were something to watch. Can't wait to see the poses by the window!

Bridal Family - Sisters for Joya

What a joy-eous day! I had the pleasure of attending to the second sister of a Joya bride. Jill is the bridesmaid in the far right. Mother of the bride, Dot, is the 4th lady from the left and my next bride...hopefully is standing next to her Mom.

Love being part of the family. Jill now has a lovely little boy and is expecting her next in April.

Lindsay, my dear bride lives in Atlanta with her husband but gets to travel home to Maine often. Lucky me gets to see them when they are all together for skin care and makeup.

It was a glorious day in Northport, Maine at Point Lookout. Spirits were as high as the clouds.

Their lovely hair styles...designed by Lena Hartford, Hair that Moves.

Photographer Michelle Stapleton.

Joya beauty got a new camera for her birthday! Not that I could ever compare to the professionals but I wanted to be able to post fun events and products more casually.

Stay tuned

Bridal Beauty - Whitney's Day

Images courtesey of Emilie Inc. Photographer

I am not sure who was looking forward to August 14th as much...Whitney, the bride or me. We met last year and she graciously agreed to have me participate in her lovely wedding day beauty preparations. Whitney of "Gus and Ruby's" of Portsmouth, NH has an eye for color and her wedding palette did not disappoint...from the stunning gown to the bridesmaids dresses (plum purple) and shoes (orange with white polka dots) to the riot of color in the flowers. We brought some of the color into her wedding makeup in the form of a deep purple eyeliner with warm shadow highlights.
FUN just like the Bride.
Thank you Whitney for having me. Blessings for many happy years together...for us as friends and with the groom as well

The Makeup Show in Review

I am so excited about the new techniques and products I picked up at The Makeup Show. Got to use them these past two weekends and I am truly impressed with the advanced formulas of these products. Just giving you another reason to hire a professional makeup artist for your special events. These eye creams are used for underwater photo shoots and an aquatic ballet troupe. They are beautiful and they absolutely do not budge. And..talk about perfect skin. The ladies looked like they stepped out of the pages of a fashion magazine ad that had been photo shopped yet they said they didn't feel like they were wearing anything on their face.
Hooray! Mission accomplished.
Thank you Dany Sanz who came to the US from Paris just for this event and for the few selected participants of this workshop.

Joya beauty goes back to school - PHS Prom Fashion Show

I wanted to share this with you...so happy to be included in the Portsmouth High School Prom Fashion Show. Along with my dear friend and colleague Lena Hartford from Hair that Moves we were high school seniors again. Ah...those were the days.

This is the lovely thank you letter we received:

First of all, on behalf of the Student Council Class of 2012, we would like to thank you so very much for the phenomenal job you did for all the kids dazzling them with beautiful faces.

When else are you going to be pampered and given three dazzling and handsome outfits to wear, be accessorized and fussed over, and in the spotlight where all eyes are on you and how stunning you look and feel?

Did you happen to see the two articles covered by the Portsmouth Herald and Fosters Daily Democrat this morning? If not, here are the links:

http://www.seacoastonline.com/articles/20100412-NEWS-4120324

http://fosters.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100412/GJCOMMUNITY_01/704129927/-1/FOSNEWS0309

The portsmouth Herald also posted many photos of the runway walk if you want to check those out as well.

I hope you had fun and that the kids were nice and behaved themselves and let the professionals work their magic.

Ciao for now,

Why Airbrush Makeup?

Ladies today want lightweight coverage...we are the no makeup makeup generation.
I use my air brush for almost every makeup application when photography or video is involved....from brides to head shots to editorial.
Why?
No one says it better than the makers of the product that I use...OCC Skin(Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics)so I am going to tell you about this wonderful makeup medium in their words:

The precision application offered by airbrush makeup has two major benefits that stand up to the challenges presenting makeup artist today.

Full Coverage, Sheer Texture:
A true airbrush foundation is opaque, yet thin in texture, offering a full coverage finish that's dispersed as sheerly and evenly as possible. The result is a perfect-looking skin achieved with a minimum of product.

Refined Finish:
The spray dot pattern of an airbrush application closely resembles the way a camera reads textures - in Pixels. The effect is more seamless than the trace marks brushes and sponges can leave behind. While usually unnoticeable in person, these imprints can become quite visible in hi-def close-up or in a high resolution digital photograph.

The product that I use in all my makeup applications is lightweight, breathable and completely oil-free. It's also free of alcohol, silicone and other common dermal irritants found in airbrush makeup formulas of the past. OCC Skin is also 100% Vegan and Cruelty Free.

Spring Forward at Joya beauty

Ok...so it is mud season outside but that doesn't mean you can't pretend that it is Spring with a bright spot of color.

My favorite this season is called "girlie" and it is the most beautiful shade of rosey pink...even I can wear it. It is already sold out and back ordered so that means the big name brands will be featuring it in their packaging.

Come on in and play with the new colors and textures of makeup...get a fresh new look over a cup of tea.

What Goes On Behind that Image.....

As a makeup artist I love doing creative work with award winning photographers. We take current trends, ideas, inspiration from movies etc. and re-create them for our own portfolios or to submit to magazines for ad campaigns. Many times we are given these same creative pieces or photos of celebrities by clients as examples of how they would like their makeup done for a special event or even their wedding.

This article from "Beauty Fool", a website I love, explains what really happens during a photo shoot.

I did the makeup for this photo during a creative makeup workshop with Jeff Dachowski. This lovely model is beautiful in real life and the placement of the makeup and color choices are key. However there are aspects of this photo that are enhanced with lighting and skilled photography.

Bringing photos to your makeup artist is a great idea for inspiration and to discuss color choices, makeup intensity and mood but remember...this is still a photo of YOU.

Radiant November Joya bride

Meet Katie, our lovely November Joya bride. Talk about excited to get married! Katie was virtually floating down the aisle to her groom. I was invited to attend the ceremony and of course got all misty eyed when they "tied the knot"....literally. The bride and groom included the Celtic tradition of joining hands and having a decorative cord wrapped around them while they said their vows. Then a beautiful Fall walk through The Boston Commons to their reception at The Park Plaza.
I was flattered to be asked to do Katie's makeup for her wedding as she is also a respected professional in our beauty business as were many of her guests.
Thank you for having me Katie and best wishes for many happy years together.

Joya beauty goes to Miss Teen Maine Pagaent

Late Breaking news!!!! Vanessa won "most photogenic" in the pagaent!
Meet Vanessa, our very own Miss Teen Maine contestant. Lena Hartford, Hair that Moves, and I teamed up and traveled to So. Portland last night to attend to this hopeful young lady. Her "fun in fashion" costume was an original custom made salsa dress...very beautiful and I made her make to match the variety of colors in the dress. We are anxiously watching the website, Miss Teen USA, to see the results....WHEN she wins we are all off to Chicago for the next part of the competition!
Vanessa and her sister Ashley came to me as a referral from Crystal at Madeleine's Event Central. She was shopping for her formal white dress to walk the runway and our dear friend introduced us. Vanessa and Ashley visited the Joya Studio for a makeup and hair design date and promised to come back on a regular basis now! Love making new friends.
Check out the shop for your holiday dresses now. They have a stunning selection perfect for all your Christmas and New Year's Eve events.

Fabulous first bridal show of the new season....

The first Madeleine's Event Central Bridal Showcase hosted at Ethan Allen's furniture store was a smashing success. Brides, grooms, families and friends all came out to see what is available for their 2010 and 2011 weddings.
Can't wait to start planning the details. I will be participating in 6 more throughout the course of the winter season and am excited at the prospect of making so many more new friends. More to come with dates and locations and a link to the EC website!

My groom of 27 years in front of the Black Tie Limo. couch....seats 30 people!
